"Gogol. Nachalo" (2017), also known as "Gogol. The Beginning," is a Russian fantasy-horror film directed by Egor Baranov. The film stars Alexander Petrov as Nikolai Gogol, a young clerk in the Third Section of the Imperial Chancellery, who is tormented by visions that blur the line between reality and the supernatural. Set in 1829, the narrative follows Gogol as he collaborates with investigator Yakov Guro (Oleg Menshikov) to solve a series of mysterious murders in the village of Dikank

In 1829, Nikolai Gogol is a young clerk whose own writings feel shallow and unsatisfactory, leading him to purchase and burn entire print runs of his books. He suffers from violent epileptic seizures, during which he experiences vivid visions. Investigator Yakov Guro witnesses one of these episodes and realizes that Gogol's visions contain clues that could help solve actual crimes. Together, they embark on a journey to uncover the truth behind a series of mysterious events in the village of Dikanka.
